Orlando gets but a sliver of Florida's private-equity billions

Hedge fund firms and private equity funds funneled billions of dollars into Florida last year, but not much of it found its way to the Orlando area, according to data released last week.

That data, from the Private Equity Growth Capital Council, matters because many businesses depend on investors to grow and develop. Access to capital is an important component of business formation and development. Without sufficient funds, it is very difficult for young companies to prosper.

In 2012, Florida attracted $17.3 billion in private-equity funding, the fourth-most in the country.

However, just $310 million made it to Orlando-area enterprises. That is only about 2 percent.

One corporate finance expert commented that Orlando-area tech firms have difficulty attracting investment because they tend to be very new and small. Since they have little by way of track records, it is hard for them to demonstrate their worth and potential to investors.

Then again, there seems to be some optimism that Orlando's futures might change. A second corporate finance industry insider said he felt that things are just beginning to get back to pre-recession levels, and once that happens, investors will be more confident about investing in Orlando startups.

As we said earlier, arranging appropriate financing is very important for most new or young businesses. If you own a business and are trying to attract investor capital, you might consider working with an attorney who has experience helping clients in situations similar to yours. After all, experience is often a valuable teacher.
